Pay-to-Win And The Problem Of Shortcuts
It is without a doubt that the integration of blockchain technologies in the gaming world has been nothing short of revolutionary. Players finally have true ownership over their in-game assets, which, in the form of NFTs, could have utility and liquidity beyond the confines of the game, allowing for the crafting of completely new and unique experiences. These NFT-driven games have led to the creation of completely new in-game earning mechanisms such as Play-to-Earn, which allow players to earn real income through gameplay.
However, with this hyper-tokenization of games, it’s become increasingly more prevalent for games to focus too much on monetizing even the most basic of gameplay features, i.e. Pay-to-Win, forgetting that there is one true and tried method to allow players to progress through the game without spending a lot of cash just to do the most basic things. The point of games is for them to be fun, challenging, and to require effort to get through them, not pay your way through the game. In short, gamers don’t like shortcuts!
So how can a game remedy this issue and bring blockchain-based gaming back to its gaming roots?
Zeeverse — Put In The Work, Earn Your Zee's And Evolve Them
When creating the Zeeverse game, we thought long and hard about how to create the most engaging and challenging game while providing players with as many rewarding opportunities as possible, all the while ensuring a long-term sustainability and stability of the project. And, much like the core concept of the Bitcoin protocol, we realised that a player’s invested effort, time and energy in the game should be proportionately represented by their level of progress and achievement in the game. No Pay-to-Win shortcuts, only Proof-of-Play.
To play in the Zeeverse, players must first acquire their very own Zee, represented by an ERC-721 token, which they can obtain Zee eggs or other players on an open marketplace. You will get your first three starter Zee from the introductory tutorial. And once all of the Eggs hatch, which itself takes 24 hours, the fun really begins and you will begin progressing through the adventurous universe of Zeeverse.
Each Zee has a unique Type, Class (Healer, Tank, Damage) and collection of traits that define its appearance and battle capabilities. The only way to improve these traits is to level up the Zee by engaging in battles and gaining valuable XP, which takes time and effort to achieve. Only when enough XP is collected can the Zee reach its evolution threshold for special ability improvements.
Roadmap — Going Forward
We’re only just beginning to scratch the surface of Zeeverse. Our ambitions are high, ideas abundant, and plans long-term. We are in it for the long haul, and there is still a lot of work to be done.
Having just rolled out the Alpha version of the game, we’ll be hard at work implementing all of the small improvements necessary to bring us closer to the Beta release. In the meantime, efforts are ongoing into making our very own NFT Marketplace a reality, as well as implementing our Live Events, Professions, and PVP game modes.
